Pelham Alabama Competition Arena and Banquet Hall | Dual NHL Arena is another project by M2Architects , featuring two NHL sheets of ice and a banquet hall for events and celebrations. It is also the University of Alabama’s NCAA Hockey home. Designed a facility that would be an asset to the community and serve entire Birmingham area. After an initial discussion about bringing a professional hockey team to Pelham, they decided to build a competition arena and banquet facility for the city in Shelby County. They researched other ice skating facilities throughout the country and chose Huntsville, Alabama, home of the number one ice facility in the country, as their model. Eric Milberger was chosen as the architect, because of his success with Huntsville’s Arena and his comprehensive knowledge of how a skating facility would function and its needs. The project, with a budget of $6,800,000, was designed and put out for bids in six months and completed construction within one year. The Pelham Iceplex opened in the winter of 1996. The Pelham Ice Complex includes two NHL ice rinks, 5000 seats for exhibits, tournaments for both dry and ice sports, eight locker rooms, a party room, concessions, a pro shop, parks and rec offices, and a 500-seat banquet facility.
