Ganado Sports Arena | Multi-Purpose Arena

Date Completed: 2002
Project Cost: $11,000,000

Ganado Unified School District and Community Pavilion M2 Architects and Chuska-Sahara won a national design competition in March 2002 to design a sports facility for the Ganado Unified School District, located within the largest Navajo Reservation in the United States. Eric Milberger was the project architect for the team, which faced competitors from across the country, representing the top recreation designers. The Ganado Unified School District wanted to create positive sports venues for the students and the communities they serve. The facility they envisioned would house 5500 seats on a basketball and multipurpose arena, an outdoor rodeo arena with 3000 seats, and a softball and baseball complex. The facility would cater to basketball, wrestling, volleyball and kids’ activities. The greatest challenge was to create a facility that would meet all their desires, yet could grow with their budget. Eric Milberger proposed a facility that would meet today’s needs, but could also expand into a 5500 seat arena without adversely impacting their budget.
